New Wrinkles in Certified Lumber Markets: Tree Farm and SFI set to give FSC a run for its money.
January 30, 2009. Hardwood Review Express,

Until recently, hardwood landowners did not have a viable option for certification because of the expense of participating in both the FSC and SFI programs. However, in August 2008, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) endorsed the American Tree Farm System on par with SFI and FSC. The Tree Farm System represents 91,000 family forest owners in 45 states, most of whom manage woodlots of less than 100 acres each. This is the hardwood demographic both SFI and FSC have failed to capture and the source of an estimated 92% of the hardwood sawtimber.
