Forest Owners Winter School Slated at Community Colleges of Spokane, Spokane, WA

Spokane, Wash. – Owners of forests in northeast Washington will have the opportunity to learn how to keep their forests productive and healthy, wildlife-friendly, and safe from wildfire at the Forest Owners Winter School.  The WSU Spokane County Extension educational event will be held on Saturday, February 24, at the Community Colleges of Spokane, Spokane Campus, N. 1810 Greene Street, Environmental Sciences Building #8.  Gates will open at 8:00 am and presentations will begin at 9:00 am.

Experts in forest management, insects and diseases, wildlife, soils, tools, and more will provide essential information forest owners and managers ought to know for achieving goals, protecting the health and beauty of their land, and their financial investments.

Participants will be able to attend up to six different 50-minute presentations, choosing from two-dozen topics. Among the topics being offered are forest health, wildfire protection and recovery, advice for landowners before logging, wildlife habitat, big game, songbirds, chainsaw safety and maintenance, bark beetles, root diseases, soils and roads, protecting your home from fire, thinning and pruning trees, and see if a portable sawmill is for you.  Speak to contractors about mechanical thinning and masticators, chipping, and other brush disposal choices for reducing wildfire hazard.

There will be a resource area featuring equipment exhibitors, vendors, and public, private, and nonprofit organizations that provide products and services to assist landowners.  Speak with private consulting foresters and public agency service foresters and get your questions answered, such as “when selling timber, what’s my fair share?  Is a handshake good enough?  What do I do when the money is gone?” Arrange to have a state forester or wildlife biologist take a walk in the woods on your own property. Refreshments will be available.

Advance registration received by February 20 is $30 per person and $40 per family. Registration after February 20 and the door is $40 per person and $50 per family.  Lunches will be available for an additional $10 each, and must be pre-purchased by February 20.
